Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum vs. CBD Isolate: Which CBD is Best for Your Pet's Health?

When it comes to CBD for your pets, the options can feel endless, and it's easy to get a little overwhelmed. Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, CBD isolate—what do these terms even mean?

Full-spectrum CBD, often called "whole plant extract," contains all the naturally occurring compounds in the hemp plant—cannabinoids, terpenes, terpenoids, and a small amount of THC (typically less than 0.3%). Though this small amount of THC is relatively unproblematic for humans, it can be problematic for our pets. For dogs, specifically, even this fractional amount can cause static ataxia, the "body's inability to hold a fixed position." It causes swaying, stumbling, and general movement problems, as THC affects the cerebellum. Dogs have more density of CB1 receptors & a more homogenous distribution of CB1 receptors in the hindbrain, which is a significant difference compared to humans. The taste of those terpenes and some flavonoids can burn the back of the throat, causing a little mouth frothing and head shaking until the taste subsides, which may make administering full-spectrum products difficult with pets.   

Additionally, because full-spectrum products contain all the plant's natural compounds, they may trigger allergies or sensitivities in some pets. It's important to consider all these factors when selecting a product, especially for pets with known sensitivities.  

While full-spectrum CBD contains all the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and oils found in hemp (including trace amounts of THC), broad-spectrum CBD undergoes an additional refinement step to remove the THC from the finished product while maintaining many additional compounds (other cannabinoids, terpenes, etc.). However, it can still have a strong taste and smell and may trigger allergies in sensitive pets.   

For pet owners in areas where THC is not permitted or for those who prefer to avoid exposing their pets to THC, broad-spectrum CBD offers an alternative to full-spectrum. However, it's important to note that broad-spectrum CBD still contains plant compounds (minus THC), which may trigger allergic reactions in sensitive pets.  

CBD isolate is the most refined form of CBD, with all other compounds, including terpenes and THC, removed. It is the most commonly studied and widely sold form of CBD in its pure state, apart from THC. However, studies continue to advance on the additional minor cannabinoids, such as CBN and CBG.
