Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum vs. CBD Isolate: Which CBD is Best for Your Pet's Health?

on January 20, 2025

When it comes to CBD for your pets, the options can feel endless, and it's easy to get a little overwhelmed. Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, CBD isolate—what do these terms even mean?

Understanding them is the first step toward finding the perfect CBD product for your furry friend.

In this article, we'll explore the key differences between full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate so you can feel confident in making the best choice for your pet's unique needs. We want you to feel confident and excited about supporting your pet's health with CBD. Let's dive in!

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD, often called "whole plant extract," contains all the naturally occurring compounds in the hemp plant—cannabinoids, terpenes, terpenoids, and a small amount of THC (typically less than 0.3%). Though this small amount of THC is relatively unproblematic for humans, it can be problematic for our pets. For dogs, specifically, even this fractional amount can cause static ataxia, the "body's inability to hold a fixed position." It causes swaying, stumbling, and general movement problems, as THC affects the cerebellum. Dogs have more density of CB1 receptors & a more homogenous distribution of CB1 receptors in the hindbrain, which is a significant difference compared to humans. (For more information on CB1 & CB2 receptors, see our post "The Endocannabinoid System")

We understand the sensitivity of animals across species, with taste and smell inextricably linked. The taste of those terpenes and some flavonoids can burn the back of the throat, causing a little mouth frothing and head shaking until the taste subsides, which may make administering full-spectrum products difficult with pets.

Additionally, because full-spectrum products contain all the plant's natural compounds, they may trigger allergies or sensitivities in some pets. It's important to consider all these factors when selecting a product, especially for pets with known sensitivities.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

While full-spectrum CBD contains all the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and oils found in hemp (including trace amounts of THC), broad-spectrum CBD undergoes an additional refinement step to remove the THC from the finished product while maintaining many additional compounds (other cannabinoids, terpenes, etc.). However, it can still have a strong taste and smell and may trigger allergies in sensitive pets.

For pet owners in areas where THC is not permitted or for those who prefer to avoid exposing their pets to THC, broad-spectrum CBD offers an alternative to full-spectrum. However, it's important to note that broad-spectrum CBD still contains plant compounds (minus THC), which may trigger allergic reactions in sensitive pets.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is the most refined form of CBD, with all other compounds, including terpenes and THC, removed. It is the most commonly studied and widely sold form of CBD in its pure state, apart from THC. However, studies continue to advance on the additional minor cannabinoids, such as CBN and CBG.

The refinement process ensures CBD isolate is odorless, tasteless, and free from allergens. Its high level of purity makes precise dosing and consistency simple and streamlined, making it an ideal choice for those who have struggled with dosing and getting their pets to take a traditional full or broad-spectrum tincture.

Why do we formulate the way we do at LIX?

Backed by over 60 years of global cannabis research, our formulations focus on combining isolated cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBN with a deliberate and science-driven approach. We prioritize understanding the therapeutic benefits and potential contraindications to provide the best support for your pet's wellness journey.

At LIX, we craft our products with care, isolating cannabinoids to remove plant matter and additional compounds. This meticulous process eliminates potential allergens, making our formulations safe and tolerable for all species, especially sensitive animals. Traditional full and broad-spectrum products often have a strong hemp taste and smell or even cause throat irritation at higher doses—factors that can make pets shy away and create challenges for pet parents. Our products remove these barriers, making them easy to administer and ensuring pets can achieve effective milligram dosages comfortably.

Because terpenes can be harsh for pets, we exclude them from our tinctures. Terpenes are present in all plants, fruits, and grasses. They can be used as aromatics lightly diffused or, in select cases, as a topical, and they're ingested in the normal diet of dogs and cats. There isn't a need to have them as part of the tincture line since they're present in so many other botanicals. Terpenes from cannabis are no different than terpenes from any other plant.

Similarly, we avoid adding herbs like chamomile and tryptophan to our cannabinoid blends. Keeping our line pure and simple ensures clarity in their effects and avoids the potential for side effects, such as upset stomachs or headaches that unnecessary additives can cause. This straightforward approach ensures consistent, effective results for your pet's wellness.

At LIX, we know every animal is unique. While some thrive on full-spectrum or broad-spectrum products, others need a gentler option. If you've had challenges with tinctures or treats in the past—or are exploring CBD for the first time—we're here to guide you. We learn more every day, and the focus should be on the compounds of the plant we adore and how those compounds can help our animals and us. Let us support your pet's wellness journey with thoughtful, science-backed solutions.
