Strange visitors. Spooky sounds. A doorbell that won’t quit. Halloween brings plenty of excitement, but our pets may have a different opinion about the festivities.
A little preparation can help make the night more comfortable for everyone. From securing the candy stash to planning your pet’s evening routine, here are five ways to keep the scares for the trick-or-treaters.
Those Halloween treats belong out of paw’s reach. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, and xylitol, a sweetener found in some sugar-free candy and gum, can be life-threatening for dogs.
Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and discarded wrappers somewhere your pet can’t access. Remind little goblins in the house to keep their haul tucked away, too.
If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate or anything containing xylitol, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Your pet doesn’t have to join the welcoming committee.
Before the first trick-or-treaters arrive, set up a quiet room away from the front door. Add their favorite bed, fresh water, and a familiar toy. Soft music or white noise can help soften the sounds outside.
Give them time to settle in before the neighborhood gets busy, and check on them throughout the evening. A comfortable place to retreat can help take the pressure off a night full of unfamiliar sights and sounds.
A tiny vampire cape might be adorable, but your pet’s comfort comes first.
Choose an outfit that lets them move, see, breathe, and communicate normally. Avoid loose pieces they could chew or swallow, try the costume before Halloween, and always supervise them while they wear it.
If dressing up makes your pet uncomfortable, skip it. Their everyday fur coat is always a good look.
With the front door opening all evening, even a familiar routine can get unpredictable.
Check that your pet’s collar fits securely, their tags are readable, and their microchip registration includes your current contact information. Keep pets safely away from the entrance so an unexpected fright doesn’t become an escape.
Don’t leave your pet’s Halloween preparations until the doorbell rings.
