One of those cannabinoids found in hemp is CBD, or cannabidiol (pronounced cann-a-bid-EYE-ol). CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it won't get you high — but there's a growing body of evidence that it has numerous health benefits, as CBD binds to these receptors in our endocannabinoid system, resulting in an overall improvement and consistent wellness in the areas this system regulates.

Yes, it sure is. Mostly anecdotal evidence exists in support of use of CBD oil in horses; even so, it’s good to have information. It’s being used to combat obsessive compulsive disorder in horses and a study at Texas A&M are currently conducting studies (as of March 17, 2020) to further research the efficacy in our equine friends.

The study is being led by Dr. Guay and is measuring the effect of CBD on inflammation, stress and stereotypical negative behaviors in horses, as well as pain and lameness scores.

For the trial, Dr. Guay and student researchers are administering different forms of CBD (i.e. oil or pellets) to the study horses, and measuring and evaluating the physiologic effects on the horses’ heart rate and cortisol level. They are also observing horses after dosing to see whether CBD had a measurable impact on obsessive-compulsive behaviors (like cribbing). Additionally, they’re tracking how long CBD stays in the horse’s system and, of course, how long it lasts once administered in varying doses. *We will keep you all updated on this study as it progresses. They’ll likely have results to report by EOY 2021.

“[By] the end of this study, we hope to have the data that will define and document what exactly is going on with the horses. Is it actually helping to minimize stress and stereotypical behavior? … Once we have this for horses then we’d like to … see if we can increase wellbeing within our food production animals,” says Dr. Guay.

Hemp is used a couple different ways in horses – as bedding and as an ingestible/consumable. Most are concerned with the consumable part of the conversation, I’d guess, so let’s start there. This hemp derived CBD oil is the perfect balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids making it a perfect oil when combined with the organic coconut oil also super safe and often used in the equestrian world. Additionally, the combo oil contains vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. CBD has shown to help with soothing the nervous system of horses without affecting balance or cognition. Horses metabolize differently than our canine, equine, or human friends, so the dosing is comparatively smaller for such a larger animal.

A pink hue shows the high quality of the coconut oil (Organic MCT) we use. When your coconut water (and in our case oil) turns pink, it means the coconut itself contained high levels of an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase. Polyphenols are a type of naturally occurring antioxidant and responsible for making coconut water and coconut oil so nutritious and delicious. While all coconut water begins its life as a clear liquid, those with higher concentrations of polyphenols will turn pinkish the longer they’re exposed to oxygen and sunlight or heat, and, if you’re still hanging in there reading, if they remain clear, they have lower levels of polyphenols. We want high levels of polyphenols!

Mystery solved.

When you have a horse (or a human) on medication and under the care of the vet (or dr.), run the use of CBD by them before using it. Occasionally, they’ll want you to adjust the dosage so we’d like you to have their blessing.
